Treats Anyone?

The other day I felt brave and began the crazy journey to give our puppy ESPN (pronounced Espen) a haircut and nail trim. Normally we bring our dogs into the groomer, but I felt we could do it ourselves. The mere challenge of it makes me jump in with both feet and tackle this issue. Just to let you know- the first time I tried grooming our dog Samson, he ended up looking like a diseased, homeless dog. Very funny stuff! So I was feeling strong and began the journey. At first, ESPN sits and sniffs nervously as he listens to the sound of the clippers. He knows what’s about to happen.

Moving forward, I begIn with the simple areas of his body just to ease his mind, but then I move in for the kill. He did his best to fight me, he tried to run away, and he was so easily distracted. Every sound seemed to be a reason to run jump, bark or mess me up. It was very frustrating, even causing me to wonder “What the heck am I doing?” This dog won’t even sit still for one short minute- “Doesn’t he realize that I just want to make him look better and to help him feel more comfortable?” Cmon!! Then I had a thought- “what about a treat?” So I brought out the treats and man did he straighten up. Still a puppy, but he no longer had ADHD! His attention span and obedience changed. As I was finishing the ESPN adventure, I had this question—What would we as people do for a treat (or reward)? Would we take the time to hear Gods heart concerning our lives? Would we stop being so easily distracted with so many things? The Martha vs Mary issue. Jesus told Martha that she was troubled and worried about many things, but Mary had the one thing right. We must be able to chill more in His presence remembering He rewards those who diligently seek Him? Let’s stay focused on the treats- prizes- rewards! God truly has your best interest in mind.
